Appalled at comments in humanist story
I?m dismayed at the lack of understanding of atheism illustrated in the AP article of Feb. 10 ?Humanist Army officer wants recognition.? AP quotes Harold Katz of the Humanist Society: ?Atheism means ... you don?t believe in God.? True enough. Then: ?... you could have an ax murderer who?s an atheist. Humanists have ethics and a philosophy.? Atheists may not believe in God, but that does not mea...

About Atheism
Pascal's Wager
Someone who offers Pascal's Wager is arguing that to believe in God is a better bet than not believing in God. If you believe and God exists, youll go to heaven and avoid hell; if you believe and are wrong, you lose nothing. If you dont believe in God and God does exist, youll lose heaven and go to hell; if youre right, then you gain nothing. There are a lot of problems with this argument.

Christian Divorce & Remarriage
American Christians who are most preoccupied with sexual morality tend focus on homosexuality, pornography, sex before marriage, etc. Except for the Catholic Church, we don't hear much about divorce and remarriage (and even American Catholic leaders don't say much that is covered in the media). Why? Some Christians do argue against divorce, but even they don't claim that remarriage is a sin. Ac...

Early penitents were sprinkled with ashes, wore sackcloth, and were required to remain apart from the ...

For early Christians and for Eastern Orthodox Christians today the rules of fast...

Religious Solicitation at Work
It's not unusual in America for people to solicit colleagues at work for money for charities. Sometimes this takes the form of fund raisers (like Girl Scout cookies) and sometimes it takes the form of outright donations. The pressure to give is enough of a problem regardless of the context, but this becomes worse if you are pressured to donate to a religious charity. There are risks to taking a...

Days of Easter Season
In Christianity, Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus, which Christians believe happened three days after he was buried. Easter is not an isolated holiday: it is the culmination of the season of Lent, which lasts 40 days, and begins the season of Pentecost, which lasts 50 days. Because of this, Easter is a holiday which stands at the center of the Christian liturgical calendar and serv...
